OUR PEOPLE

Laura O'Donnell

Formerly a HM Treasury Policy Advisor, Laura now specialises in criminal litigation. She has found that the analytical rigour and precision required at the Treasury closely mirror the demands of criminal litigation, particularly when dealing with complex evidence or statutory interpretation.

With a focus on drug-related offences and a growing interest in financial crime and money laundering investigations, Laura ‘s work explores the intersection between traditional criminal defence and white-collar crime, particularly where drugs offences overlap with financial misconduct or asset forfeiture proceedings. Motivated by a strong commitment to fairness and due process, Laura aims to develop expertise in forensic financial analysis and criminal litigation, contributing to a balanced and principled approach to criminal justice.

Laura defends clients facing drug-related charges, combining knowledge of substantive law, evidence, and procedure with sharp analytical skills to identify procedural flaws in police investigations. She is committed to protecting individual rights and ensuring fair treatment within the criminal justice system, particularly in cases where addiction or social vulnerability play a significant role.

Laura regularly attends Parliamentary and Youth Justice Policy conferences to engage in discussions on developments in law, policy and practice. She also participates in various All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) on domestic violence and abuse, women in prison, Women ‘s Aid, and the Centre for Women ‘s Justice, advocating for improved protection of vulnerable women within the criminal justice system.
Her work reflects a deep interest in criminal justice reform and the importance of a gender-informed approach to women ‘s offending. She supports the transformation of responses to domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.

In 2024, Laura joined an expert panel at Westminster to discuss the Criminal Justice Bill. In 2025, she was again invited to Westminster Palace to contribute to an expert panel on the Sentencing Review and gender disparities within the Criminal Justice System. The panel highlighted that the majority of women in contact with the system experience multiple disadvantages, including mental health needs, harmful substance use and poverty.
